How Federal Agencies Honor Black History Month

As an annual observance each February, Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans in the United States – from activists and civil rights pioneers to leaders in industry, politics, science, culture and more.

Many federal agencies honor Black History Month. Here’s a rundown of some of their observances:

  • NASA: Each year, NASA shines a spotlight on the stories behind its African American scientific pioneers – in the past and today. Learn more here.

  • DHS: The Department of Homeland Security celebrates its black workforce and how “boasting a dynamic and diverse workforce” helps to enhance its mission. Learn more here.

  • DoD: The Department of Defense recognizes the bravery and exceptional service of Black military and civilian personnel and celebrates the richness and diversity of their achievements during February and all year. Learn more here.

  •  DoL: The Department of Labor has published a series of blog posts around Black History Month. These range from workplace safety for Black Americans to honoring African American leaders at the agency. Learn more here.

  • FEMA: FEMA honors its African American employees who help make our nation safer, stronger and more prepared. The agency also highlights how it aims to be equitable when helping people during and after disasters. Learn more here.

  • Census Bureau: Robert L. Santos, Director of the Census Bureau, recently authored a blog post about how celebrating Black History Month is one way the Census Bureau achieves its mission and vision. Learn more here.
