Elon Musk and Other Tech Leaders Call for Pause in AI Development

2023 has certainly shaped up to be the year where Generative AI has officially taken over – for better or for worse.

While AI has the ability to streamline many aspects of our work lives, it also has the potential to displace a large portion of the global workforce, and even usher in a new reality where “the machines have taken over.”

It has even caused Elon Musk and other technology leaders to call on AI labs to pause the development of systems that can compete with human-level intelligence. Musk and others want to avoid AI spreading propaganda and “automating jobs” to the point where we risk “losing control of civilization.”

In addition, Italy is the first country to ban ChaptGPT over a suspected breach of privacy rules. The UK government is also urging regulators to develop rules around the development of AI solutions.

From a government IT perspective, we published a Makpar Fed Mission Success podcast interview that offered a very candid take on the impact of ChatGPT on government technology development and beyond.

The podcast interview highlighted how Generative AI could be used for low-level IT coding and content creation – but the human element will remain critical in the foreseeable future. It also focused on the pitfalls of ChatGPT from a business, technology development and societal perspective.
